Objectives

The objectives of the EuroGene project are:

  • To study the requirements and obstacles of the EU-wide deployment of EuroGene.
  • To complete any customisation necessary for the EU-wide scope of the service (multilingual issues, cross platform issues, security and reliability of data, platform compatibility issues)
  • Extend the currently delivered service to the one described in the previous paragraphs
  • Address certification and legislation issues
  • Convert the current paper process to an online secured service
  • Validate the service through pilot sites
  • Validate the market through research involving all actors (individuals taking a proactive role in their health, wellness, and disease prevention, and their practitioners i.e. doctors and clinicians)
  • Complete the business case of the service deployment

Among others, some implementation goals of the project are:

  • Shorten service delivery times (currently 4-6 weeks, aiming for 3-4 weeks)
  • Convert current paper lifestyle questionnaire to online version enabling immediate delivery. This step will also provide the opportunity for extending the interactive services, for example instant feedback of questionnaire results (dietary and lifestyle analysis).
  • Convert current hardcopy printed report to electronic version for e-delivery (pdf format with some components in html). This will require utilizing appropriate encryption and secure data transfer technologies.
  • The above steps will reduce the cost of the services
  • Improve logistics by supplying pilot partners with inventory of product components (sample collection swabs, consent forms, pre-paid envelope for returning swabs to laboratory)
  • Enable multilingual capabilities for both the service and the user interface

    Indicators of Achievement

Service accepted by users (individuals and practitioners) in the test sites

Tests:

  • Patients endorsement at clinics
  • Discussions appear in medical networks, such as bulletin boards
  • Practitioners generate media interest
  • Recruit and follow through directly at least 100 patients to be able to have statistical power to assess significant benefits (target number through practitioners is 200 patients)

Service endorsed by clinicians in the test sites

Tests:

  • Academic papers and/or posters on EuroGene
  • Recommendation in clinics and to colleagues
  • Clinically generated media interest
  • Support for further activities such as certification

Service submitted to insurance companies for approval

Test:

  • inclusion in their list of supported solutions

Note: Unlikely to happen within lifetime of this project: We do not expect Insurance companies to include the service in the ones they reimburse within 18 months time. In order for this to happen takes much more during the project lifetime, however the dialogue should begin during this phase.

Service submitted to the Ministries of Health for approval

Test:

  • inclusion in their list of supported solutions

Note: Unlikely to happen within lifetime of this project: Meaning that reimbursement of such a test from the public sector is something that is beyond the scope of this project. Nevertheless we will invite people from Health Ministries to the project’s workshops in order to be informed of the benefits of such a service.

Validation of the service concept regardless of the language barriers

Tests:

  • Service is endorsed by users at all test sites.
  • Bi-lingual users can be tested on more than one service.

Validation of the selling price

Tests:

  • Sales activity is generated.

Informal feedback from test site users.
